“I wanted to begin by offering our condolences to the family, the Portuguese Federation and their national team for the passing of Diogo and André Jota.” Montse Tomé chose to open the press conference with this message on behalf all of Spanish Football Federation and also the Spanish National Team squad.

Moving on to sporting matters, the Spain head coach highlighted the importance of scoring a goal so early on. “I think the players did a great job and we are very happy for them,” she enthused after Spain’s opening match.

Regarding Vicky López, she highlighted that she had seen her looking good, that she is a young player and that they trust in “her talent.” “She’s in a period where we’ve been able to give her minutes and she’s responded excellently.” She also emphasised the importance of continuing to work with her so that she can keep “enjoying what she does.”

Another headline from the match was the return of Aitana Bonmatí. A return authorised by Spanish medical staff, to whom she expressed her gratitude: “thanks for the work they’ve done with Aitana and the communication there has been between everyone.” In addition, she stressed that the player was happy to play and eager for more minutes. “She was very happy. She was really looking forward to it and told me she was left wanting more. She’s already thinking about what’s coming next and it’s a real pleasure to have players like her.”

“Clean sheets are fundamental for the team,” Montse remarked on the defensive performance. “Adriana was calm, she knew the game plan. She’s a player who contributes in every aspect and played a great match,” she said about Adriana Nanclares starting in goal.

Regarding Cata Coll, she explained that her absence was due to her still recovering from illness and that the player herself informed them she wasn’t at 100%. “Cata will be able to improve over the coming days,” she reassured the media regarding the goalkeeper.

Following Montse Tomé’s appearance, Alexia Putellas, as the match POTM, addressed the media. “The best way to start was with a win. We’re all leaving here feeling very happy with the result and the victory,” she emphasised about the match.

“I see her in good form, enjoying herself. No matter how old you are, you go out there to represent your country and to win. I see Vicky doing very well and enjoying herself.” These were the captain’s words about her teammate Vicky López.

“We have a huge amount of respect for Portugal and for all their players, despite the result,” explained Alexia Putellas. She also stressed the importance of going out at 100% in every match and staying at the top of their game.
