Montse Tomé: "The plan worked and set-pieces paid off"

The national coach looked back on the match against Denmark, highlighting the benefit of set pieces.

Montse Tomé was clearly satisfied with the result and performance against Denmark at the Vejle Stadion, where Spain were playing for the first three of the six points available during this international window: ‘The game plan worked well. We had analysed Denmark and anticipated what they would do with their 4-4-2 defensive structure. Then they changed in attack and found the spaces very well but then our pressure was very good’.

The national coach acknowledged that superiority at set-pieces was key and their work in training put into practising them is paying off: ‘The team's performance was very positive, also at set-pieces. They’re something that’s very important in the game that we are working on and it's giving us results. They were two good goals, both for the scorers and for the whole team’.

Finally, she explained that playing the Danish side in a double-header in qualifying is a unique situation, but that the team is treating it with the same intensity as ever: ‘It was a special situation because we haven't experienced it before. At home they did what we expected them to do and for the second match we're already imagining what they might do because there may be different particularities but we're going to go out with the same intensity with and without the ball. We hope to score more goals, as we could have scored more today, and keep playing well.
