Montse Tomé spoke to the media at the post-match press conference after a rollercoaster of a match in Tenerife: ‘It's something great that the team has. Today, I felt it again with them. The scoreline was against us, we had missed a penalty and we thought we might be having an off day but they believe in their game, in their essence and they have an incredible winning mentality. We must also congratulate the staff. It’s been a very special training camp and they have managed to take us back to another European Championships’.

The coach stressed the importance of set-pieces, which they also exploited on their way to victory in the first match: ‘We give importance to set-pieces and in the end we managed to qualify’.

Of course, the Spain coach took time to praise the fans in Tenerife, who never stopped cheering the Spanish players on even when they were two goals down: ‘Another factor that was part of the comeback is that the spectators were cheering us on right from the word go. The players felt a connection with the crowd and when we were behind they didn't stop cheering. When we started to come back, the feeling from crowd was a boost. We have to be grateful for their support and everything they have given during our time in Tenerife’.

Finally, Tomé acknowledged that there are no gimmes in international football, and was very happy to have secured Spain’s ticket to the European Championships: “at the elite level there are no easy games. We try to instill this mentality in the group and that's how they feel. To win the first game against Denmark like we did and for it to be so close tonight was something we knew might happen. The mentality of the team has meant that we can turn it around and say that we are now going to the European Championships”.
