Montse Tomé: ‘We want to qualify for the European Championships in this international window’

The national coach faced the press to go over her squad for the matches against Denmark.

Montse Tomé sat down in the press room of the Villalonga room at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas to assess the squad list for the upcoming UEFA EURO 2025 qualifiers for the press. The national team will face Denmark on Friday 31 May in Vejle and again on Tuesday 4 June at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Before taking questions from the media, Tomé wanted to send a message: ‘I would like to start by congratulating our U-17 national team on their European Championships success. I also would like to congratulate the coaching staff and the RFEF for their work. I know the players and I want to congratulate them’.

On the players selected for the double-header against Denmark, the national coach commented: ‘I like to talk about the players we have called up because they are the ones who have to play a leading role. They have all given me the impression that they want to be here. Every time they get called up they have a chance. What we need for these two games are the 24 players we have selected.

When asked about having called up 24 players and not 23, Montse Tomé explained the case of Vicky López: ‘After the first game against Denmark, Vicky López will leave the training camp because she has to do her university entrance exam. Her academic education is important. From then on, we'll keep 23 or maybe we'll call someone up from the U-23 squad’.

As for the objectives of this window, ‘in this international window we aim to qualify for the European Championships. There may or may not be players in the squad for the Olympic Games who have not come", Tomé added.

Finally, the national coach analysed the double-header against Denmark: ‘It's a new scenario, but we are adapting to it. They're a strong opponent, they've had good results, they've improved their game. Despite being the same opponent we will have to approach the games differently. The Danes try to play out from the back, that's what they're all about, and then use the high press well. We have a plan in place and we're looking forward to meeting up with the players on Monday.
