Montse Tomé: "We will demand the best from ourselves"
In the press conference organised by the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), Montse Tomé and the captain of the Spanish team spoke about the excitement of competing in Spain Women’s first ever Olympic Games.
Regarding Japan, the national team's first opponent, she commented, "we have prepared for this match by analysing the Japanese team from different perspectives. We have an identity and an ability that surpasses any opponent. Football is football, and during the match there will be various phases; we will adapt and try to be the best we can be". She added, "Japan are a strong, good opponent that we are excited to face, and we will give it our all".
When asked about the expectations the team generate, Tomé admitted, "we come from winning a World Cup and a Nations League, we are qualified for the next Euros, and all that creates expectations. Anything can happen in a match, but our duty is to give our best. The team's performance and attitude are very positive. We have many things to improve, and from there, we need to understand that this is the elite level, and we will demand the best from ourselves". To which Irene Paredes added, "we accept that there are expectations of us, but we have lost the favourites tag because we are making our debut in the Olympics, and we know how challenging that is. We trust in ourselves fully, but we are obliged to give our all".
Regarding the squad, Montse explained, "all the players here have earned their place through their talent and ability. We choose them, but they are the ones knocking on our door".
The captain of Spain confessed, "we have full confidence in the squad, we have worked for this, and I'm sure it will go well".
