Montse Tomé: “We’re starting a new year with great excitement”
Montse Tomé appeared in the press room at the Villalonga Hall in the City of Football in Las Rozas to discuss her squad for the upcoming friendly matches against Canada and Italy. The national team will face Canada on Friday, 25 October, at the Francisco de la Hera stadium in Almendralejo, and on Tuesday, 29 October, they will play Italy at the Romeo Menti in Vicenza.
Montse began the press conference by sending a message of encouragement to Inma Gabarro, who suffered an injury in September: “We are supporting her in everything she needs, we want to help her, send her lots of strength, and wish her a good and speedy recovery.”
The national coach also had a few words for the U-17 women’s team, who started their journey in the World Cup being held in the Dominican Republic yesterday, with a victory. “Congratulations to the U-17 team, keep competing at the highest level and with the best,” Montse said.

Both the coach and her technical staff are very eager and excited about what lies ahead. “I would like us to really focus on these 23 players. We’re starting a new year with great excitement. We have five international windows plus the sixth for the Euros, so all the players will have opportunities. We are set to play highly demanding matches against great opponents, and all the players have earned their place in this squad,” commented the coach. She also emphasised that “they deserve to be here, they’ve earned it through their performances. They are the ones on the pitch, and we are the ones who observe and select.”
There is a lot of anticipation, “a lot of excitement about the Euros and what’s to come. I believe all Spanish footballers should feel that with good performances, they can make it into the national team. We value that, and we are very clear about what we want and the kind of team we want to be.”
The coach defended her work and that of her team, stating, “I love what I do, and the technical staff love the work they do, and that’s what we need to convey.”

With a clear mindset she started, “we can improve, we can learn, and we want to do better,” Montse Tomé declared that she holds herself to the highest standards to keep improving, taking a positive approach by analysing past situations and learning from them. “I feel it’s going to be a good year, with the Euros, which will allow us to work well with both friendly and competitive matches.” Montse highlighted that “this year we’ve won a Nations League, we’ve competed in the Olympics for the first time. We’ve analysed what happened, and we want more. We can improve, but then you also see that good things have been achieved too. The level of expectation is high, matches are decided by fine margins, and we will keep focusing on those details to make the team better.”
