Montse Tomé's rousing talktalk before the Denmark match

The coach recalled a tough defeat when she was still a player. After 12 games without a win against the Danes, she has now managed four clean sheets in a row.

‘I played against Denmark once. Once and I remember it well. We were playing to qualify for the World Cup. Not the one in Canada, the one before that. I remember it like it was yesterday. In the morning we all got together on the promenade. (We told ourselves) Today we do it. Today we qualify’. I went to take my place on the bench. The match started full of people, the Danes run a lot, as you´ll see... 1-0, 2-0, 3-0... I looked at my team-mates and said: ‘And we wanted to win’. Then, 4-0, 5-0... We lost 5-0! We wanted to, but we couldn't. Today we can! Today we can and we want to! Let's go get them!’.

It was with this team talk that Montse Tomé began her rallying teamtalk before the match at the Vejle Stadion against Denmark, a team that Spain had failed to beat in their first twelve encounters. That match referred to by the national coach took place at the Viborg Stadium in April 2006. Today, all that is behind them, and the world champions have come on leaps and bounds since that match, having beaten the Danes in their last four matches without conceding a goal. A streak that began in 2021 and which they aim to extend this Tuesday at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Tenerife.
