Olga Carmona and Andrés Iniesta: Two Footballers with Star Power
August 20, 2023 is now a part of our country's history. Olga Carmona's goal in the 29th minute of the World Cup final in Australia and New Zealand not only echoed through our antipodes but resonated in every corner of Spain.
A goal that inevitably takes us back to June 11, 2010. On that occasion, the eyes and hearts of all Spaniards were fixed on the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg and that unforgettable 116th minute. Andrés Iniesta, with his goal, gifted the first star to Spanish football.
This time, thirteen years later, the Sevillian Olga Carmona was tasked with transforming the efforts of an entire team into a historic goal, etching the second star in the history of our football – the first for the Women's National Team.
Two distinct goals, yet sharing a significant similarity: securing the World Cup for the Spanish National Football Team. Andrés Iniesta's goal came from his right foot, a well-placed shot that beat Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. On the other hand, Olga Carmona used her left foot to overcome English goalkeeper Mary Earps after an impressive assist from Mariona Caldentey.
Two goals, two dates, and two footballers forever linked by their achievement.
