Just hours before the big event, the opening match against the Portuguese national team, Spain player Patri Guijarro sat in the press room of the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern and addressed the numerous media outlets present. First she commented on the team’s mood, saying they have: "good feelings, these two weeks we've been training together have been very good, with very positive feelings in Madrid, and also here in Switzerland, where we've been welcomed really well. We’re really looking forward to tomorrow."

Patri also assured the assembled media that they are arriving at the tournament in a good physical and mental state: "Whenever you’ve had a season, then a summer with a competition, then another season and another summer with a competition, you think, wow, this could take a toll physically and mentally, but I think we’re arriving in great shape. I’d even say better than before, because after a year of work we’ve improved, which is our goal in every training camp, to improve individually and collectively. I think we’re in very good physical condition and I see the team as being really eager."

The team doesn’t see itself as the favourites but does feel ambitious about competing at the highest level at this Euros: "We don’t like labels, there are many very strong teams. Football doesn’t allow labels because every match is a different world. All the national teams prepare 200%, as do we. Our goal right now is to win tomorrow. In the short term, to finish top and get through the group. We are ambitious and we want to win everything." One thing the international player highlighted is how the perception of other teams towards the Spanish national side has changed: "The compliment is that they focus on our style of play and like how we play and how we’ve evolved over time. It’s all or nothing, either you stay or you go, and against any national team we’re going to go all out for the win."

On a personal level, these Euros are special for Patri Guijarro: "For me, it’s also a joy to be sitting here, it’s special, very special. I really wanted to come back into the squad. We’ve evolved a lot this year, we’ve grown and we care about what we love, playing football. I won’t lie to you, it’s emotional to experience the Euros."

Tomorrow’s opponent, Portugal, is a familiar foe and fresh in Spain’s minds. The two Nations League group stage matches will be very useful as a way to understand what to expect, Patri stated: "I predict a match more like the first one we played in Portugal because in the second they were more tired, but in the first they were very aggressive and had a very dangerous counter-attack. Those two matches help us because Portugal are what they showed in that first game. It’s going to be quite an intense match."
