With a beaming smile, delighted by Spain’s emphatic success in the Nations League final, Sonia Bermúdez appeared before the media in the press room at the Metropolitano. After 10 p.m., and following the celebration of a well-earned continental title, the coach highlighted her players’ excellent performance and expressed deep gratitude for the support of a record-breaking crowd. Nights like this are remembered for a lifetime.

Post-match feelings.
“I’m very happy. We knew, after the match in Germany, that we could improve on that first half, and today the team came out much more switched on, much more focused, pressing higher. That was the idea. It’s true we could’ve scored in the first half, but we controlled their transitions well. Defensively, the team was spectacular, and in attack we have players with a real eye for goal. We’re very happy.”

Winning in Madrid.
“I feel enormous joy. My whole family came, and people traveled from far away. We felt the fans so close—this stadium has something special. I played for this club, and I want to thank everyone for their affection and support. We wanted to give the fans this victory because they gave us everything.”

Champions.
“A huge sense of satisfaction. The team was a 10 out of 10 from the first minute to the last.”

Sonia as player vs. Sonia as coach.
“I don’t know what I would have thought back then. Coaching this incredible team is a dream come true. I feel so proud and so happy—it’s time to celebrate.”

World Cup.
“We’re going to enjoy today, this victory, because it takes so much to achieve. In February we’ll start thinking about World Cup qualifying.”

Superiority against Germany.
“That was the match plan. If we scored first, we would keep applying that same intense pressure. Our intention was to press very high. That was the idea—to be really aggressive, because Germany never gives up.”

Growth and following of women’s football.
“I’ve really enjoyed it from the staff’s side. You enjoy it enormously. The players are the ones who attract so many people. The fans were a 10—they were fantastic.”

Pina and Vicky as the new generation.
“Everyone who came was ready to play a great match. Pina finds great positions inside, and Vicky has the quality to beat opponents both inside and outside. But this is about performance—we don’t look at birthdates. We call up the players who are in the best form.”

Assessment of her four matches in charge.
“I’m delighted with the four clean sheets. This team knows how to suffer and how to bring out its best in difficult moments. It’s remarkable that two top teams didn’t score a single goal against us. We have so much talent to score goals—things couldn’t have gone better.”

Attendance record.
“I want to thank everyone. It was a fantastic, unforgettable, incredible night… absolutely incredible. And we were able to dedicate the title to them, which is exactly what we wanted.”
