REPORT | Spain's overwhelming World Cup start with a historic win (7-0)

The Spanish national team is the leader of group E thanks to an impeccable match against Costa Rica, which surpasses all records to date.

Never in the nearly hundred-year history of the National Team has Spain won by seven goals nor scored three in half an hour, much less in the opening match, which the team hasn’t successfully done for 16 years.

No team in the World cup so far has won by this goal difference and never in the history of this tournament has a team been able to complete 549 passes during the first half to finish the game with more than a thousand in total.

These conclusive and irrefutable statistics have made for an unforgettable achievement by Luis Enrique and his team who did not give the experienced Costa Rican team a chance to score on the field in Qatar.

HIGHLIGHTS

Initially the coach opted to place Azpilicueta on the right-hand side and Dani Olmo on up top, who started to link up well with Pedri and created the first chance to score after five minutes.

With Sergio Busquets’ dominating play from the space of midfield, linking up with passes through the lines to Gavi, Pedir and Asensio, Spain threatened the goal and had to wait eleven minutes until Dani Olmo showed his quality on the ball inside the area to beat Navas who was coming off his line.

During this match Spain has demolished a long list of historical records and of the present World Cup, where no one has yet achieved such a resounding victory.

A goal that would open a historic win, the largest in World Cup history, which was made possible thanks to an unwavering tactical philosophy established by the Spanish Coach: play at all times as if the game has just begun.

And just like that the tsunami of football was going to continue without pause with Marco Asensio finishing a cross from Jordi Alba at the 21 minutes mark and Ferran Torres scoring a penalty from a clear foul on the Spanish left-back.

The Valencian is already standing out as the top scorer under Luis Enrique, adding a second goal after half-time, minutes before Gavi from Cádiz became the third youngest scorer in the history of the World Cup (The Brazilian Pele is the first)

The spectacle continued with the welcomed debut of Alejandro Balde and two additional goals from Carlos Soler and Álvaro Morata, who thus surpassed Fernando Morientes in the all-time table.

A magnitude of records that contribute to the most important thing, fueling the shared aspiration in the best competition in the world of football, as Germany awaits next Sunday as the next and imminent challenge.
