RFEF Official Statement in defence of the referees

The RFEF wishes to show its support, solidarity and confidence in the referees in the face of the criticism they are suffering in the completion of their roles.

It also wishes to strongly condemn the theft and dissemination of various VAR audios, as it is a clear violation of data protection, which is why it has been brought to the attention of the Guardia Civil, as announced yesterday.

Continuing on the path towards greater transparency and understanding of refereeing is a firm decision of the RFEF and the CTA, which will continue to carry out its work with professionalism and rigour.

Our refereeing standards are a benchmark in Europe and around the world, as recognised by UEFA and FIFA, with Spanish referees being appointed at major events such as World Cups, European Championships and the Champions League.

Respect for the referee should be a maxim for all those involved in football.

Referees are an essential part of this sport and the respect they deserve is an important way to set an example to wider society.

It is the ultimate responsibility of all to guarantee and promote this respect. Football and its good development depend on it.

Without referees there is no football.
