The future of the Spanish national team begins this Wednesday with Sonia Bermúdez at the helm.

A two-time UEFA Women’s Under-19 champion as Spain’s head coach and an iconic figure in Spanish football during her playing career, Bermúdez has now been introduced at the Ciudad del Fútbol as the new head coach of the senior national team, heading a renewed technical staff.

Born 40 years ago in Madrid, Sonia Bermúdez Tribano was central to some of the most memorable chapters in the history of women’s football in Spain. As a player, she featured in the team’s first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup (Canada 2015), the pinnacle of an international career in which she earned 63 caps and scored 35 goals for the national side.

“Wearing the Spanish national team shirt is the greatest honour a footballer can experience, and I would like to transmit that pride—something to be felt in our daily work and in every competition we play.”

In her new role as head coach, Bermúdez will be supported by former Spanish international Iraia Iturregi as assistant coach. Iturregi joins the national team after a distinguished spell in charge of Athletic Club, during which she received the Ramón Cobo Award for best coach in Spain’s top division.

Carlos Sánchez (goalkeeper coach), Blanca Romero and Edu Caro (fitness coaches), Julen Itxaso (assistant analyst), and Adrià Millán (analyst) complete the technical staff of the senior side, whose first major challenge will come this October in the UEFA Nations League semi-final against Sweden, to be played in Málaga and Gothenburg.

“Spain is every footballer’s dream, and of course it is every coach’s dream as well. Without doubt, this is one of the most special days of my sporting career. I am fully aware of the challenge I am taking on: to coach the best team in the world, ranked number one by FIFA, and to lead the finest footballers in the world.”
