Spain looking to seal their place in the quarter-finals

After their victory over Japan, Montse Tomé's side now take on Nigeria, again in Nantes, aiming for their second triumph at Paris 2024.

The city of Paris is already lit up with the Olympic flame, as the most iconic cauldron in existence has been placed in the Tuileries garden. Just a few hundred kilometres away, in the Breton city of Nantes, the Spanish national team play their second match in the Olympic tournament this Sunday, against Nigeria, a game we arrive at with the aim of getting the three points and sealing our ticket to the quarter-finals very much on everyone’s minds.

Montse Tomé's side recorded a crucial victory over Japan in their opening game, in the same venue that hosts the World Cup winners today. With spirits high following that victory, Spain go into this second match with nothing to lose against an opponent who lost 1-0 to Brazil and have a much greater necessity to get three points that the Spanish girls who are sitting pretty at the top of the group.

It will be another demanding and tough match against rapid opponents who know how to exploit their possession in transitions, which are one of their strong points. Spain, for their part, continue their unblemished record at major tournaments and on the most demanding on international stages. World and Nations League champions, their next challenge is to secure their place in the quarter-finals of Paris 2024, something they can do this afternoon.

A strong turnout of over 10,000 fans is expected at the Stade de Beaujoire in Nantes and the match can be watched live in Spain on RTVE and Eurosport.
