Someone once said that success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, to which it should be added that in addition to sweating one’s way to victory, it is necessary to know how to recover the minerals lost along the way.

The importance of hydration in elite sport has been shown to put it almost on a par with nutrition, or so believes Toscana Viar, the head of the RFEF's nutrition department, who is conducting this innovative experiment aimed at boosting Spain's performance during the tournament.

"Despite the fact that it's not too hot, a footballer may lose up to three kilos in every game at the European Championships," explains Toscana, whose detailed study of the sweat and hydration levels of Spain's internationals during the tournament could prove key in the decisive moments of the competition.

Just as part of Carlos Alcaraz's success in winning his first Roland Garros tournament was based on the occasional swig of vinegar, the national team is also working with a compound based on said substance "to help the players overcome specific episodes of cramps, because it helps them recover quickly at crucial moments", just as happened a few days ago with the tennis player from Murcia.

A whole range of strategies based on the most cutting-edge scientific analysis and that during the competition "is also decisive on a mental level, because it has been studied that when hydration is low you are less fresh when it comes to thinking and the feeling of fatigue is greater", according to the Spanish nutritionist who is focused on turning that sweat into Euro 2024 victory.
