Virginia Torrecilla announces her retirement from football after 14 years at the top of the game

Virginia Torrecilla, one of the great references of Spanish women's football, this Thursday announced her retirement and her plans to hang up her boots. At the age of 29, the Mallorcan player said goodbye to professional football and put an end to a glittering playing career. A player the likes of which will not come around any time soon, an admirable person and an example for all to follow with her determination and life in general.

68 caps for her country

Virginia Torrecilla made her international debut in June 2013 and played 68 games for the Spanish national team, scoring 7 goals. In this time, she took part in two World Cups (2015 and 2019) and two European Championships (2013 and 2017). At Euro 2013 in Sweden, she was the youngest player in the national team and played a prominent role at the World Cup in France in 2019.

In her 14 years in elite football she has played for UD Corellense, Sporting Ciutat de Palma, FC Barcelona, Montpellier, Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal CF and won three league titles, three Queen's Cups and one Spanish Super Cup.

A Role Model for everyone

In May 2020, the Balearic player underwent surgery for a brain tumour that forced her to take time away from the pitch. However, she overcame the illness and on 23 January 2022 she won her battle by getting back playing again, having returned to the pitch 683 days after her diagnosis. The image of the FC Barcelona players shaking hands with the Mallorcan international after the Super Cup final will go down in history and stay in the hearts of those who witnessed it.
