The big leap of 'El Flaco' Sancet
Oihan Sancet makes his debut with the National Team, happy as a child on his first trip to Las Rozas with the senior team. His outstanding performance at Athletic Bilbao opens the doors to the national squad, and he's ready to seize this opportunity. "It's something I never expected. I'm really happy to be here, it's a dream," summarizes the midfielder.
He still gets emotional when he remembers how he found out about his presence on the roster, the best possible awakening on that Friday, October 6. "I got out of bed and had a message from my father telling me I was called up. I called my mother and told her. She was very happy, very excited. It's a pride for her, and she tells me to do what I know, to stay calm and play like I know how."
Sancet, 23 years old, has gone through the youth ranks and knows Luis de la Fuente well, now his boss with the senior team. "I had him in the U-18 and U-21, he's a great coach. With a very clear idea that gives a lot of confidence to the players."
He speaks with self-assurance and reveals an interesting fact about one of the nicknames he's known by in the locker room. "'El Flaco' is a nickname they gave me at 18 when I moved up to the first team. We had Berizzo as the coach, and they often referred to me as 'flaco,' and it stuck with me. Since then, they call me that."
He is a unique player with a lot of talent, taking as a reference one of the best players to come out of Spain. "I've always liked Iniesta. He's no longer playing, but I've always liked him. And from the current team, they're all great players, and it's an honor to be alongside them.
