The Brazilian Edina Alves to officiate the Semifinal between Spain and Sweden
June 17, 2019, was a historic day for the Spanish Women's National Team, as they secured their first qualification for a World Cup final phase in the French town of Le Havre with a goalless draw against China.
Four years later, the Brazilian referee Edina Alves Batista, who officiated that match, finds herself once again with Spain in another memorable event, like the one Spain will experience against Sweden on Tuesday, August 15th at Eden Park Stadium in Auckland.
This will be the third match that Edina Alves Batista referees for Spain, with a previous record of one win and one draw for the team led by Jorge Vilda.
With a spot in the qualification game for the World Cup final at stake, this 43-year-old referee born in the city of Goioerê in Paraná will be in charge of officiating this thrilling match, the fourth that Alves referees in the current tournament.
A FIFA referee since 2016 and a symbol of personal resilience after recovering from a serious traffic accident, Edina Alves will be assisted on the sidelines during the semifinal by her compatriots Neuza Back and Leila Cruz, with the Honduran Melissa Borjas as the fourth official. Meanwhile, Nicolás Gallo from Colombia and Armando Villarreal from the United States will operate from the VAR room.
