The Copa del Rey: The Story of all stories
Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona are set to write a new chapter in the 122 years of the Spanish Cup
His Majesty’s Copa del Rey. A tournament whose story is told through the countless legendary tales it has served up.
From its inception in 1903 to this Saturday, 26 April 2025, when Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona will face off in an epic clash, thousands of spectacular goals, champions, and timeless anecdotes have made the Spanish Cup one of the most magical competitions in football.
The first page in the book of the knockout tournament was written by Athletic Club, who also featured in the most recent chapter. The Basque side are also the second most decorated team with 24 trophies, in a ranking led by FC Barcelona, who have lifted the cup on 31 occasions. A list compiled over 122 years that features a total of 17 different Copa del Rey winners.
122 years filled with all kinds of stories. Torrential downpours, like in the 1929 final won by RCD Espanyol at the Mestalla, or in the 1995 clash between RC Deportivo and Valencia CF which had to be suspended and concluded three days later; legendary players like Zarra, who remains the only one to have scored four goals in a final, back in 1950; or even a cup final that had to be played a year later – the 2021 final between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad – due to a global pandemic.
A great story written through its infinite and magical tales. A story to which this Saturday, 26 April 2025, at the Estadio La Cartuja, Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona will add a brand new exciting chapter.
