The RFEF Board of Directors has appointed Sonia Bermúdez as national team head coach, who will form a coaching partnership with Iraia Iturregi.
During its meeting on 11 August, the RFEF governing body appointed the former Spain international as national team head coach, who will work alongside Iraia Iturregi as assistant coach.
The Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, chaired by Rafael Louzán during its session on 11 August, received the sporting report from the RFEF’s Women’s Football Department, after which it was decided to appoint Sonia Bermúdez, until now the U-23 national team head coach, as the new head coach of the senior women’s national team.
This decision also entails not renewing the contract of the current head coach, Montse Tomé, who will step down upon the expiry of her agreement with the RFEF on 31 August 2025. The Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Football Federation wishes to express its gratitude to Montse Tomé for her work, professionalism, and dedication in the various roles she has held within Spain’s national teams, particularly during her tenure as head coach of the senior women’s national team.
Sonia Bermúdez, the new national team head coach, earned 63 caps for Spain, scoring a total of 35 goals. She has played for clubs including Rayo Vallecano, FC Barcelona, Western New York Flash (USA), Atlético de Madrid, and UD Levante. Throughout her playing career, she won 9 league titles and 3 Copa de la Reina trophies. Additionally, she was the top scorer for four consecutive seasons. She captained the senior national team, representing Spain in both a European Championship and a World Cup.
As a coach, she began her career with the Real Madrid cadet team, securing the league title. From there, she progressed to the Spain women’s U-19 and U-20 national teams, winning two consecutive European Championships. With the U-20 national team, she competed in the World Cup held in Colombia. During the most recent season, she has been in charge of the U-23 national team.
A partnership for a new model
Meanwhile, Iraia Iturregi competed for 15 seasons in the top tier of Spanish football, making a total of 402 appearances. She won four league titles, all with Athletic Club. She was also part of the Spain U-19 national team, winning a European Championship, and went on to be a key figure in the senior national team.
As a coach, she spent eight seasons at Lezama, working with the Infantil, Cadete, B team, and senior women’s squads. She led Athletic Club B to the Segunda División league title in the 2019–2020 season. Later, in the 2022–2023 season, she was awarded the Ramón Cobo Prize as the best coach in the Primera División Femenina.
In addition, she was part of the coaching staff that won the Tercera RFEF men’s league title and secured promotion to the Segunda RFEF with CD Basconia (Athletic Club’s reserve team) as assistant coach during the 2024–25 season.
New head coaches for a unified project across all categories
Additionally, the Board of Directors has been informed of the appointment of two new coaches to the women’s national team structure. David Aznar will take charge of the U-19 and U-20 national teams, while Milagros Martínez will be appointed head coach of the U-17 national team.
