The road to La Cartuja: finalists show defensive solidity and strength at home
Athletic Club and RCD Mallorca go into the final in Seville undefeated after six tough qualifying rounds in the cup so far.
After half a dozen rounds enjoying the taste of victory this season, it has taken more than 120 years for Athletic Club and RCD Mallorca to meet for the first time in the showpiece match of the oldest competition in Spanish football.
The grand final of the Copa del Rey is exploding into the minds of Athletic Club and Mallorca fans this Saturday after both teams have progressed solidly on their demanding journey through the rounds that began more than five months ago for both of them.
Not having been participants in the last edition of the Spanish Super Cup, the two teams have had to play all six rounds involving Primera Division team, the first five of which were single-legged matches, the majority of which as the away team, before being able to aspire to lift the trophy at La Cartuja in Seville.
Seven games in all, during which the two finalists have kept a clean sheet in five games, progressing in extra time, winning penalty shoot-outs and completing famous comebacks to earn the right to be protagonists in the great celebration of Spanish football this 6 April .
