His opening match at the current European Championships, the second such tournament of his professional career, was a dazzling performance with impossible saves at key moments. The goalkeeper saved a penalty kick and he was at his usual tidy best starting Spain's passing combinations from the back.

But beyond that, Unai Simón has burst onto the scene at this European Championships as a player who has won titles with both club and national team in recent months, all of which with his usual poise on the pitch.

The player from Alavés confirmed his great form this Monday in a press conference, pointing out that "I'm matured over the course of my career. because that's what it's all about, continuing to learn over the years. This year I'm seeing the best version of myself and I hope to continue growing in this sense".

This positivity that he has transfers to the national team as a whole, since "the good performances at the last European Championships and the Nations League make this group an exciting and convincing squad. Us players, the press and the fans have the same high hopes for this European Championships. We all want to reach the final".

A goal that he works towards in every single training session with his teammates, recognising that among the goalkeepers "we push each other on. The relationship we have between the goalkeepers is very good. We know that we are all pulling in the same direction and winning titles will be a something for the 3 of us ".

After the dazzling opening win against Croatia, the player from Murguía thinks that "beyond the result, I think we played a very good first half against Croatia, he warned that although "it's very important to win the first game, that doesn't mean anything. We have to correct mistakes and keep improving".

Italy appear this Thursday as the second test on the road to continental glory and Unai expects "a very difficult game for us and for them. We all know the rivalry between Spain and Italy and we know it will be a tough but beautiful game. If we play the way Luis tells us to, we're sure we'll go far," he concluded with a nod to the Spanish coach.
