Vicky López: A Dream Double
On Sunday, 1st December, Vicky López left the national team training camp after fulfilling her dream of scoring for Spain. At just 18 years old, she has netted her first brace for the senior team.
When she made her debut for the senior side, she was only 17. It was back in February this year during the UEFA Women’s Nations League semi-finals under Montse Tomé. Reflecting on the moment, Vicky said: “I was nervous because it was an important competition to qualify for the Olympics, two crucial matches against the Netherlands and France. When Montse called me up, I was so happy because I thought, ’Wow, it’s a tough game, and she trusts me, giving me this opportunity.’ So I tried to stay as calm as possible and help the team however I could.”
Since then, the FC Barcelona player has cemented her place in the squad. While making her debut was a dream come true, scoring—twice—against South Korea was another story all together, written in the stars in bold letters, with a special dedication: “I dedicate all my goals and achievements to my mum. It’s a shame she can’t be with us, watching every match from the stands, but I know she’s watching over us from above. She’s guiding me to keep achieving my dreams.”
Part of the reason we can enjoy her talent today is thanks to her father, who “has always been passionate about football” and supported her even through the toughest times. Vicky lost her mother in 2018 after a long illness when she was just 12 years old. Back then, both she and her brother were playing football. Their father had to stay strong for them and their dreams: “We’ve been through some very tough times. Of course, I always have my mum in my thoughts, but I’m also incredibly grateful to my dad. He’s made huge sacrifices to help me get where I am today. He deserves everything.”
Vicky continues to break records and set milestones. She is the youngest player ever to make her debut for the senior Spanish national team and has just been awarded the European Golden Girl 2024. It’s no surprise that, with her newly celebrated adulthood, her teammates joke with her: “They say I should be with the Under-15s or the Under-17s! For me, playing here has been a dream come true. I’m so grateful for the welcome I’ve received from both the players and the staff, as well as the opportunity. I’m learning so much here. For me, this is where the best players in Spain are, and Spain is the best team in the world—what can I say?”
If she hasn’t achieved enough already, Vicky still has plenty more dreams to pursue. Would you like to know what they are?
