Back to work at the Juan Antonio Samaranch training facilities in the Olympic City, the midfielder took questions from the journalists who packed out the press room.

The Madrid-born player thanked the fans for their support: “We’re not only enjoying ourselves on the pitch, but we’re also seeing people enjoy our game. It’s really lovely to have so many people supporting and watching us. We’re building a story, and the more people who get involved, the easier it gets.”

Referring to the last time Spain reached this late stage of a European Championships, the player said, “I wasn’t even born yet, and personally, I’m very happy to be here, at my first senior Euros at just 18 years old,” said the FC Barcelona player, who added that “we were all so happy after the match, the bus couldn’t even leave on time because we were still celebrating, we are happy to have reached the semis still unbeaten. Now it’s time to rest and improve on the finer details.”

Now the youngest player to score for the national team at a Euros or World Cup following her goal against Portugal, she’s happy wherever she plays: “My favourite position is on the left wing, even if people don’t believe it, but wherever I play, I try to give my best.”

Asked about Athenea del Castillo, Vicky reflected on the importance of everyone being ready at any moment: “Athenea is on fire, she’s having a great Euros and we’re really happy that she’s in such good form. We all have to accept our roles, there are some of us who haven’t played many minutes but if any of them had had the chance, they’d do just as well.”

The national team are waiting to find out their semi-final opponents, “France are coming in unbeaten, both are great teams. I’d like the match to go to extra time, like Aitana said. We beat France last time, and there’s still unfinished business with Germany after the Olympics… in the end, I’d like extra time and penalties,” Vicky admitted.

The Spain quarter-final match was watched by millions of fans and for Vicky the key lies in the squad’s work: “We’re connecting with people and that says a lot about how we’re working. I’m really happy because people are enjoying Spain’s football, and my loved ones are also enjoying the minutes I’ve been able to play.”

At just 18 years old, Vicky spoke about the team’s maturity when things get tough and in hard-fought matches like the one against Switzerland: “We’ve matured as a team and we never panic.”

At this stage of the tournament, the squad are still feeling fresh: “My legs aren’t heavy, and we have a super competitive squad where any player could be a starter. I also think we’re working really well mentally, accepting our roles, with really competitive training sessions that are helping us have a great tournament.”
