Zubimendi: ‘We want to keep on doing great things’.
Martín Zubimendi began the press conference by praising Andrés Iniesta's career: ‘Words are superfluous. On a footballing level we know everything he has given, especially to this national team; but the legacy he leaves behind is as a person, he has shown himself to be a real team player.
As for the responsibility of occupying Rodri's position, the midfielder stated that he ‘doesn't think about it’ and confessed that there are various players to cover that position, alluding to the fact that ‘Spain is a country that produces a lot of decent centre midfielders’.
When asked about Sergio Gómez's first training session, Zubimendi replied with a smile, ‘I'm very happy that he has joined us, he deserves it. In a short time at Real Sociedad he has already shown us a lot, he is very versatile. Today, he has already shown what he can give, I'm happy for him’.
Regarding Luis de la Fuente's words of praise at the last press conference, he confessed that he was flattered. ‘I'm grateful, above all, for the confidence he gives me and shows in me. Since I got called up for the U21s, he has shown me the route to playing for the senior team and I am very grateful’.
He was then asked about his participation in the final of the European Championships, to which he confessed that ‘I was focused on the match and didn't think beyond that’. As for whether the squad are aware of all they have achieved, Martín Zubimendi reflected, ‘I realised what we had achieved when we arrived in Madrid, seeing everyone’s excitement was incredible, but until more time passes I don’t think it will fully sink in’.
On the ambition of the team, the Real Sociedad player was proud to say that ‘this squad knows nothing other than success, we want to go for the next game and always improve’. And he added: ‘We take it one game at a time, we have a good record in recent years, we want to keep on doing great things. I'm looking forward to this qualification campaign and to the finals. Of course, I want to improve individually to help the team.
Regarding the playing schedule ‘we all agree that the calendar is starting to become a problem, I have had less minutes than some of the other players, but it's not just about the player's health, it's about the spectacle’.
