The 90 minutes on the pitch are the most visible part of every match, but there is equally important work that takes place between the final whistle and the next kick-off—an invisible process that becomes crucial in a tournament as demanding as the FIFA World Cup.

With little time between fixtures, combined with long-distance travel, time-zone changes and varying climatic conditions, recovery becomes just as important as physical preparation itself.

Immediately after each match, the Royal Spanish Football Federation's medical department activates a meticulously planned recovery programme aimed at accelerating muscle regeneration, reducing fatigue and ensuring every player is in the best possible condition for the next challenge. This "invisible training" combines rest, nutrition, physiotherapy and the latest advances in sports medicine.

As Head of the RFEF Medical Services Claudio Vázquez explains:

“At a World Cup, recovery strategies take on even greater importance.”

The recovery process incorporates a range of advanced therapies. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases oxygen availability within the body's tissues, helping to accelerate recovery. Cryotherapy is used to reduce inflammation and relieve muscular fatigue, while photobiomodulation through red-light therapy stimulates cellular activity and supports the body's natural repair processes.

These methods are complemented by vibroacoustic and electromagnetic therapies designed to promote relaxation, reduce physiological stress and enhance players' overall sense of well-being.

In this feature, Mikel Merino offers the players' perspective, explaining the importance of these recovery routines during a World Cup campaign. Alongside him, Claudio Vázquez outlines how scientific innovation and evidence-based medical practices help optimise recovery for Spain's internationals in a competition where every minute—and every detail—can make the difference.
