Spain Conquers the Volcano to Reach the Round of 32 (0–1)
Beneath the roar of Guadalajara Stadium, Spain faced Uruguay in its final Group H fixture with two clear objectives: to secure qualification for the Round of 32 and to do so as group winners. Following an impressive performance in their previous outing, Luis de la Fuente's side knew that victory would guarantee top spot and provide the ideal platform heading into the knockout rounds.
From the opening whistle, Spain made it clear that a draw would not suffice. The European champions dominated possession, controlling more than 70 per cent of the ball throughout the opening half-hour. Despite their territorial superiority, they repeatedly encountered a disciplined Uruguay defence, firmly positioned deep inside its own half. It was simply a matter of finding the decisive opening.
Mikel Oyarzabal, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí all threatened for Spain during the first half, while Rodrigo Bentancur's long-range effort drifted harmlessly wide at the opposite end. Just as the match appeared destined to reach half-time goalless, Álex Baena provided the breakthrough. The midfielder calmly finished with his right foot beyond Fernando Muslera after an excellent assist from Marcos Llorente, rewarding Spain's persistence with a crucial goal moments before the interval.
Baena's outstanding display earned him FIFA's Player of the Match award.
Uruguay emerged after the restart with a more physical approach as they attempted to disrupt Spain's rhythm. Needing at least a point to preserve their hopes of qualification, Marcelo Bielsa's side pushed harder, yet Spain continued to dictate possession and control the tempo of the contest with authority and composure.
The closing stages became increasingly open as both teams committed fully to their objectives. Dani Olmo was denied by Sergio Rochet after a clever lay-off from Lamine Yamal, while only the crossbar prevented Ferran Torres from doubling Spain's advantage. At the other end, Nicolás de la Cruz tested Unai Simón, but the Spanish goalkeeper once again preserved his clean sheet, extending his run to three consecutive matches without conceding.
Deep into stoppage time, Agustín Canobbio was shown a red card following a heavy challenge on Pau Cubarsí.
Spain ultimately secured a hard-fought victory over Uruguay, who finished third in the group. The national team advances to the Round of 32 as Group H winners, completing the group stage unbeaten and without conceding a single goal—an ideal foundation as the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup begins.
