This Sunday’s match (20:00 CET; Movistar Plus+) will mark the eleventh Supercopa de España final contested between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Tue, 06/01/2026 - 19:08

A Historic Rivalry

The clash between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is the most frequently played fixture in the history of Spanish football. Tonight’s encounter will be the 263rd meeting between the Blaugrana and Los Blancos across all competitions, with an overall record of 107 Real Madrid victories, 104 Barcelona wins, and 51 draws.

In the context of the Supercopa de España, the two clubs have faced each other 18 times. All but one of those meetings—the 2022 semifinal—were finals: seven under the former two-legged format and three in the current four-team format.

Real Madrid claimed victory in the first four Supercopa finals contested against Barcelona, during a decade of Madrid dominance between 1988 and 1997, a period in which Los Blancos lifted five titles led by the likes of Butragueño, Míchel, Hugo Sánchez, Zamorano, Raúl, and others.

The two sides would not meet again in this competition until 2011, when Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona ended Madrid’s supremacy by winning the final with an aggregate score of 5–4. One year later, Real Madrid reclaimed the trophy, prevailing on away goals after a 3–2 win at Camp Nou and a 2–1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu. Their last two-legged Supercopa final meeting came in 2017, when Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid dominated with a 5–1 aggregate win.

No team has successfully defended the Supercopa title in the past 15 years.

More recently, Barcelona and Real Madrid have met in each of the last three Supercopa finals. In 2023, the Catalans triumphed 3–1 at Riyadh’s King Fahd Stadium (goals from Benzema; Gavi, Lewandowski, and Pedri), with Xavi Hernández on the bench. A year later, at Al-Awwal Park, Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid responded emphatically with a 4–1 victory, highlighted by a Vinícius Júnior hat-trick.

The most recent Supercopa final between the two giants took place on January 12, 2025, in Jeddah. On that occasion, Hansi Flick claimed his first title as Barcelona head coach after a 5–2 victory, with goals from Lamine Yamal, Lewandowski, Balde, and a brace from Raphinha.

It has been eight years since the reigning LaLiga champion went on to win the following season’s Supercopa.

FC Barcelona currently top the Supercopa de España honours list with 15 titles, two more than Real Madrid. Tonight, at the Alinma Stadium in Jeddah, both sides will look to further enrich their legacy in the competition by lifting the first trophy of the 2026 season.

A Clash of Styles

Hans-Dieter Flick and Xabi Alonso have faced each other only once as head coaches, a matchday ten LaLiga encounter that ended in a 2–1 Real Madrid victory. That result remains the only defeat Flick has suffered against Real Madrid, having previously won all four meetings last season: two league matches and the finals of both the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España.

The Stadium

The Alinma Stadium, located to the north of Jeddah, will host the crowning of the Spanish Supercopa champion for the second consecutive year. With a capacity exceeding 60,000 spectators, the venue—part of the King Abdullah Sports City complex—promises another memorable occasion, as it did in the finals staged there in 2020 (won by Real Madrid) and 2025 (won by FC Barcelona).

The Refereeing Team

José Luis Munuera has been appointed as the referee for the Supercopa de España final. The Andalusian official has refereed 31 Barcelona matches and 20 involving Real Madrid, and has previously overseen two Clásicos: the 2022 Supercopa semifinal, won by Real Madrid, and the first leg of the 2023 Copa del Rey semifinal, which ended in a Barcelona victory.

He will be assisted on the touchlines by Iñigo Prieto and Antonio Martínez, with Alejandro Quintero and Adrián Díazacting as fourth and fifth officials. Daniel Trujillo will oversee VAR duties, assisted by David Gálvez (AVAR) and Víctor García (AVAR).
