SUMMARIES | Final Spots for the Round of 32
The draw will take place on Tuesday, 9 December, at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas.
Three days, 28 matches and 84 goals later, the MAPFRE Copa del Rey has brought its second round to a spectacular close — with comebacks, last-gasp victories and upsets.
The most notable result of the final matchday came from CD Atlético Baleares, who defeated top-flight RCD Espanyol at the Estadi Balear with a goal from Jaime Tovar, thus becoming the only Segunda Federación side to reach the next round of the competition.
The feat achieved by the Palma-based team nearly found equals at the Adolfo Suárez and Narcís Sala stadiums, where Real Ávila CF and UE Sant Andreu — also playing in the fourth tier of Spanish football — put up fierce resistance at home against Rayo Vallecano and RC Celta de Vigo, respectively. In the first of those matches, a goal by Álvaro García broke the deadlock in the 120th minute; in Barcelona, meanwhile, a frantic penalty shoot-out was required to tip the balance in favour of Claudio Giráldez’s side following the final kick by academy player Yoel Lago.
Aritz Aldasoro of Real Racing Club, Mario González of Burgos CF and Jesús Vázquez of Valencia CF were among the other standout names of the night, confirming their teams’ qualification with late goals. For Valencia, goalkeeper Dimitrievski also shone, saving a penalty in the final moments with the score at 1–1 and his side down to ten men.
Once again, the MAPFRE Copa del Rey has given us moments to remember.
Before the CD Extremadura – Sevilla FC match, a heartfelt tribute was paid in memory of José Antonio Reyes.
The Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas will host the draw for the Round of 32 next Tuesday, 9 December — an event in which the Spanish Super Cup participants will also be included.
