Four blockbuster ties for the most coveted Cup
The eight remaining teams now know their opponents for the Copa del Rey Mapfre quarter-finals, the last knockout round to be played as a single match. The fixtures will take place between 3 and 5 February.
The quarter-finals promise high drama, as only eight contenders remain and the margin for error is non-existent at this advanced stage of the competition. Four outstanding matches will decide the semi-finalists of the most cherished tournament in Spanish football, with the semi-finals to be played over two legs.
As in previous rounds, there is no safety net: it is win or go home for the surviving teams. The draw took place following a minute’s silence held in the Luis Aragonés Hall in memory of the victims of the tragic railway accident in Córdoba, with Spanish football paying its respects to the families and all those affected.
During the event, Jefté Betancor—scorer of a brace against Real Madrid in the round of 16—recalled Albacete Balompié’s remarkable achievement. Albacete are the only Segunda División side left in the competition and head into the quarter-finals full of belief as they dream of another upset. Connections were also made with Zubieta to hear from Real Sociedad midfielder Beñat Turrientes, and with Lezama to speak to Athletic Club’s Robert Navarro. Real Betis Balompié’s perspective was represented by Aitor Ruibal from the Luis del Sol training ground.
The draw was conducted by Antonio López Alfaro, an Albacete legend and the club’s all-time leading scorer, alongside Antonio Sivera, goalkeeper for Deportivo Alavés—the only team in this edition yet to concede a goal. In accordance with the regulations, Albacete, as the lower-division side, will host their quarter-final tie, welcoming defending champions FC Barcelona.
The remaining fixtures will see Deportivo Alavés face Real Sociedad at Mendizorroza; Valencia CF host Athletic Club at Mestalla; and Real Betis Balompié take on Atlético de Madrid at the Benito Villamarín. Four compelling battles await, with eight passionate fanbases united by a single goal: reaching the final at La Cartuja. Everyone wants to be in Seville. Everyone wants to lift the most beautiful trophy in Spanish football.
