MATCH REPORT | Spain deliver and reach the grand final (0–1)
The Spanish women’s national team delivered once again, securing their place in the grand final of the UEFA Women’s Nations League. After their impressive performance in the first leg in Málaga, Sonia Bermúdez’s team claimed victory over Sweden in Gothenburg (0–1), thanks to a goal from Alexia Putellas, assisted by Claudia Pina, in a tightly contested encounter.
From the opening whistle, Sweden appeared compact and disciplined, aware of what was at stake and committing many players to defence. Despite this, Spain maintained control of possession, building play through various combinations and creating the clearest chance of the first half from a well-delivered free kick by Mapi León, met by Irene Paredes inside the box. The opening period was characterised by intensity and balance from both sides.
After the break, Bermúdez’s team showed even greater determination. Despite their four-goal advantage from the first leg, the Spanish players were eager to win again and seal their ticket to the final in style — with victories in both matches. Their dominance became evident as they continued to press forward and create danger in the Swedish half.
The goal arrived in storybook fashion — mirroring the combination from the first leg. A promising Spanish move ended with the ball at the magical feet of Claudia Pina, who spotted Alexia Putellas arriving unmarked. Spain’s number 11 struck first-time inside the box, just as she had done at La Rosaleda, to open the scoring and confirm Spain’s passage to the grand final.
In the closing stages, Sweden pushed to reduce the deficit, but Cata Coll stood firm, stopping every attempt from the hosts and preserving the narrow yet decisive lead earned by Alexia’s goal.
Spain will now look to defend their title in the UEFA Women’s Nations League final. The final will be played over two legs — the first on Friday, 28 November, and the second on Tuesday, 2 December (kick-off times to be confirmed). The national team will host the return leg at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, where they will face either France or Germany.
