Marc Cucurella’s Four Kisses Before Every Match
In room 1119 of Spain’s team hotel in Guadalajara, Mexico, Marc Cucurella welcomed the cameras just hours before the national team’s final FIFA World Cup group-stage match against Uruguay.
Spain would go on to defeat Uruguay and finish top of Group H, but before kick-off there was a moment that revealed much about Cucurella’s character. The Spanish national team’s cameras followed the left-back as he went through the personal routines that have become an essential part of his matchday preparation.
Away from the bustle of the dressing room, Cucurella’s first ritual centres on his family. During an intimate moment from the team hotel, he speaks with his wife and children on a video call.
“It’s been many days since I last saw them. I’m eager to win and to be back with them,” he says.
His pre-match traditions continue just before arriving at the stadium. The defender reveals that the final song he always listens to before every match is “Yo lo soñé” (“I Dreamed It”), a routine he has maintained since before the start of UEFA EURO 2024.
The most meaningful ritual, however, comes as he puts on his shin pads—specifically the one on his left leg.
“I keep photos of my family inside. I always give them four kisses: one for my wife and one for each of my three children.”
These small but deeply personal gestures offer a glimpse into the human side of one of Spain’s most influential internationals, illustrating how elite football is built not only on talent and preparation, but also on the strength and support of family.
With those familiar routines accompanying him once again, Cucurella played his part in another assured Spanish performance as the national team secured victory over Uruguay and confirmed its place at the top of Group H.
