Merino Sends Spain Through to the Nations League Quarter-Finals (1-2)
Spain travelled to Split, Croatia, hoping to secure their place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals, while fully aware of the challenge that awaited them. The passionate Croatian supporters packed out Poljud Stadium, the hosts needed a win and a strong response after their heavy 0-7 defeat to England, and the demands of this new Nations League format had already taken their toll in terms of matches and travel. Despite all of this, and after battling through a match that proved extremely difficult at several stages, Spain defeated Croatia, collected another three points and secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals (1-2).
Both sides went toe-to-toe in the first half. Spain controlled possession and the tempo, but Croatia created the more dangerous chances. Luis de la Fuente’s side struggled to find a way through a resolute Croatian defence and, after a couple of saves from Unai Simón, Perišić headed the opener. The hosts took the lead following a counter-attack that ended with the Croatian No. 14 finding the net from the rebound. Spain had a chance to equalise late in the first half following a move involving Pedri and Lamine Yamal, but were unable to convert it.
Spain defeated Croatia in Seville (4-1) and have now done the same in Split (1-2).
After a first half in which Croatia had been the better side, the Spanish coach made changes at the break, bringing on Mikel Merino in search of an equaliser. And, as we have seen on other occasions, the Pamplona-born midfielder took the team on his shoulders and showed exactly what he is made of. He levelled the score in the 61st minute, and Spain continued to push forward.
Croatia began to show signs of fatigue, while Luis de la Fuente continued to make changes to keep his side fresh. Then came a moment of brilliance from Merino: he controlled the ball, turned, struck it and sent it into the top corner to score Spain’s second goal, and his second of the night, in the 88th minute. Spain once again demonstrated that they are world champions, possessing the character, energy and talent to keep winning even when a match becomes extremely challenging.
As a result, Spain bring this first international window to a close with 12 points from 12, having secured their place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals and with the feeling that there is plenty more to come from this team.
