Tomorrow, Sonia Bermúdez will make her debut on the bench as head coach of the Spanish national team, leading Spain in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League semifinals. Earlier today, she held the official pre-match press conference at La Rosaleda, answering questions from the dozens of journalists who filled the stadium’s media room.

Bermúdez began by expressing her support for Maite Oroz, who recently suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury, sending her best wishes for a full recovery on behalf of the entire Federation and the national team family.

On the eve of such an important debut, the Madrid-born coach showed her enthusiasm and focus: “I’m very focused on the match — on tomorrow. We’re happy with the week we’ve had, with the players’ work and commitment. Now it’s about deciding the best possible starting eleven to beat Sweden. For that, you’ll have to wait.”

Regarding the team’s captaincy, led by Irene Paredes, Bermúdez explained: “It’s a decision made by the staff. We believe we have the best five players to take on that role — they help with everything. The responsibilities are shared, and we’re very happy with that. The players come here to compete and to win.”

The coach gave no clues about the starting lineup against Sweden or the positioning of players such as Salma or Vicky: “We have very versatile players who can perform in different positions — you’ll see soon enough. Vicky is a young talent; we need to be patient. She’s only 18.”

Although her version of Spain has yet to be seen, Bermúdez outlined her vision for the team: “I’d like to see a team that scores a lot of goals, keeps clean sheets, moves the ball well, and plays with the quality these players have. Spain’s style is very recognizable. We want to dominate possession, keep improving, and win titles. For now, we’re fully focused on Sweden — it’s going to be a very tough match.”

Finally, she expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome in Málaga: “We’d like to thank everyone for the hospitality we’ve received here. It’s a privilege to play in Málaga — the people have really come out to support us. Málaga is always special, and we hope everything goes well tomorrow.”
