The two nations have met 16 times, with Spain holding the advantage: nine victories, three draws and four defeats. Their most recent encounter came in November 2009, when Vicente del Bosque's Spain secured an emphatic 5-1 victory in Vienna, inspired in part by a David Villa brace. Fittingly, Villa paid a visit to the squad during their final training session before Thursday's knockout tie.

Spain's most recent meeting with Austria ended in a commanding 5-1 victory.

The only previous World Cup encounter, however, went Austria's way. A 2-1 defeat during the second group stage at Argentina 1978 brought Spain's tournament to an early conclusion.

Spain arrive in the knockout rounds after finishing top of Group H, following a goalless draw with Cape Verde and consecutive victories over Saudi Arabia (4-0) and Uruguay (1-0), results that secured first place in the group.

Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, progressed as runners-up in Group J, behind defending champions Argentina. They opened the tournament with victory over Jordan, suffered defeat against Argentina and sealed qualification with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Algeria on the final matchday, a result that proved enough to retain second place.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Luis de la Fuente expressed his growing confidence in the team:

"Every day I believe even more in this team. I've always trusted them because, for me, they are the best footballers in the world. This World Cup is showing just how difficult it is to progress, and while we remain demanding and realistic every day, we are also optimistic."

There are no second takes in the knockout stage, no opportunities for retakes, and the spotlight never fades. Against Austria, Spain's objective is clear: remain centre stage and move one step closer to the happy ending every great story dreams of.
