Spain Confirms the Global Excellence of Its Football

As of Thursday, 18 September, the sky has become the only limit for the Spanish National Football Team, officially ranked number one in the FIFA World Ranking in both the men’s and women’s categories.

This unprecedented milestone in the current decade had never been achieved by any of the 211 federations that make up football’s governing body, with the sole exception of Germany in 2015, when its men’s side were world champions and its women’s side European champions.

In 2025, Spain has earned the right on the pitch to enjoy a similar privilege: reigning women’s world champions, current men’s European champions, and exemplary national squads in many respects—teams that continue to captivate the football world with their performances in recent qualifying matches.

This September, the men’s national team achieved emphatic victories in Bulgaria and Turkey, while the women’s side completed their European Championship campaign unbeaten, falling only to the cruel fate of penalties against England in the final in Basel.

On the basis of these accumulated results, on 7 August Spain overtook the United States with 2,066.79 points to lead the women’s ranking. This Thursday, the men’s side accomplished the same feat, surpassing Argentina after their recent qualifying defeat to Ecuador.

Spain’s dual leadership crowns the efforts of players, coaches, and administrators who, in perfect harmony within the wider RFEF family, have harnessed the talent of their athletes while providing the necessary resources and structures to make possible both success on the field and worldwide recognition off it.

Looking ahead, challenges remain: men’s World Cup 2026 qualifying fixtures and the women’s UEFA Nations League finals to be contested before the end of the year. Yet the recognition of Spain as the best in the world in both rankings provides added motivation for a nation determined to continue climbing towards sporting excellence.
