“We Want to Keep Making History”
Just one day before the highly anticipated return of the world champions, Luis de la Fuente sat down in the Wembley press room to share his thoughts ahead of England–Spain, the first match of the season and the opening fixture of the UEFA Nations League for the national team.
Calm team: “I can guarantee you there is no relaxation. Tomorrow’s match is complex and difficult. I know these players and they want to keep winning and making history. We intend to rise to the demands of the match.”
New format: “Not for me, certainly. None of this was raised at the meeting. We play four matches in ten days, which is a very high level of demand. We are happy to play, but it isn’t the most appropriate format.”
Ambition: “We want to keep achieving strong records. Tomorrow’s match is against a great national team, and anything can happen. If we lose, it won’t be through a lack of commitment. We are very eager to keep growing and competing. I have absolute faith in this team.”

Greater recognition: “After winning the European Championship, the recognition was already important, but the World Cup is on another level. From a media perspective, many more people know me now. It’s curious when fans come up to thank me. Seeing people’s happiness makes me even happier.”

On the opposition: “England are a great national team. They have been finalists at the last two European Championships and reached the World Cup semi-finals. England are a footballing superpower. We will try to rise to the occasion of such an important match. They are a very difficult opponent.”
Family: “For us, family is very important. It’s a term we adopted during the European Championship. But it’s not just about the team, it’s also about our own families. We attach great importance to that and have no problem with them accompanying us wherever we go.”
