Spain begin 2026 fully focused on preparations for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The national team will face Serbia and Egypt on 27 and 31 March respectively, with both fixtures to be played on home soil. Luis de la Fuente addressed the media following the announcement of his squad at 11:30, ahead of the matches at the Estadio de la Cerámica and the RCDE Stadium.

Recognition for Spanish football
“I would like to recognise Spanish football and the six clubs that have reached the quarter-finals of their respective competitions—the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. It reflects the strength and health of Spanish football. Congratulations to them.”

Four goalkeepers
“Traditions are there to be changed. It does not mean we will always call up four goalkeepers, but this was the right moment to bring these players in. With everything that can happen between now and June, they are all potential options. We want to assess them—you know how important team cohesion is for us.”

Rodri Hernández and Dani Carvajal
“We are pleased with Rodri’s current form—he is a key player for us. We knew he was still regaining his best condition and he will continue to improve. As for Carvajal, I expect him to be in even better shape by the time these fixtures arrive, and we hope he can be with us. He is a very important player and we miss him greatly.”

The Finalissima not taking place
“I think everyone knows my position—I wanted to play it. Because of the opponent and the chance to compete for a title. I would like to thank the RFEF for all their efforts to make that match happen, as well as for the work done in arranging these fixtures against Serbia and Egypt.”

Joan Garcia
“He is an outstanding goalkeeper, and not someone we have only just discovered. We have known him for a long time—he was an under-21 international with me. He is among the best goalkeepers in the world. He brings quality, professionalism and a strong presence within the group. He will push others to perform at their best. There is still a long way to go until the World Cup—we will see. We are delighted to have him. The best news is that we have many players to choose from, even if that makes selection more difficult.”

Injuries to several players
“They must continue working as they have been. I speak with them regularly—they know they must keep pushing. It is part of their approach to both sport and life. Then, of course, they must show it on the pitch. We are looking forward to having them back with us.”

Comments from the CONMEBOL president
“I have always said that we wanted to play that final. We did everything within our power. I refer to the official RFEF statement. It did not happen, but our intention was clear.”

New senior call-ups
“Mosquera reflects what we have spoken about before—players fully committed to a clear idea. He is a captain, he wants to play for Spain, and he has performed very well at youth level and with his club. Víctor has not been involved at youth level, and this window gives us the opportunity to assess him in high-level, demanding matches. International football is extremely competitive—one poor performance can send you home. We want to see them in this environment, under significant attention. They are very talented players enjoying strong seasons and they deserve to be here. In our minds, we are already playing the World Cup—that is the mentality we must have.”

Thiago Pitarch
“Thiago wants to play for Spain. He will feature with the under-19s, who have important matches ahead. He will join the senior team when the time is right. He is fully committed to the Spanish national team. Those who choose differently deserve respect, and we wish them the best. Players are free to make their own decisions. I am pleased Thiago has chosen Spain.”
