“After two games, we are heading the group of death”

Luis Enrique understands the bittersweet taste of the draw against Germany, although what has been achieved by this team stands out; and makes it clear that the objective is to "go through as first in the group"

The national coach, Luis Enrique Martínez, appeared before the media at the Al Bayt Stadium, after the match between Spain and Germany with mixed feelings. "It's a strange feeling when you have the chance to win the game against Germany and you lose it in the last few minutes," he said; but he valued that, "after two games, we headed the group of death: the one that generated the most buzz." Facing the third game of the group stage, Luis Enrique announced that it is not among his plans to go out and speculated: "The objective is to go through as first in the group and confirm what we have already shown."

Analyzing the match against the German team, the coach considered that the team had lacked "accuracy and freshness", with a "more complete" first half and a "more dense" second half. “When we managed to get ahead, we followed Germany as they went into panic mode, which resulted in playing back and forth; we were not precise and calm to take the game to where we wanted", he explained, to add that "it is difficult to calm down, but I think that we have lacked a bit of level-headedness".

With all this, the scoreboard doesn’t lie “disappointed, and that is what I have detected in the dressing room; but we could have lost, if we are honest", he pointed out about a tie that he considered "fair"

For Luis Enrique, one of the keys to the match was an opportunity missed by Marco Asensio, with the score 1-0, in which the ball went high. “I think it would have been decisive. But Germany is a power house, no one dares to rule them out to win this World Cup, and we have competed one on one", he concluded

“All 26 players are necessary.”

The Spanish coach highlighted the importance of the group by pointing out that "we need the support of all the players for this to flow and aspire to play seven games". “The 26 players are exemplary, they all want to and deserve to participate. The problem, the complicated thing for me, is having to decide who plays and who doesn't”, he stressed.

At the press conference, Luis Enrique also valued the experience of this World Cup, about which he was asked about the lack of travel between venues. The coach highlighted the comfort of the concentration space at the University of Qatar, "with some facilities of the highest quality level and a lot of attention from the staff", which means that the experience is turning out to be "very positive" for the technician.
