Atletico Madrid last team through to the semi-finals

The 'Rojiblancos' have beaten Sevilla FC thanks to a Memphis goal that sees them join Real Sociedad, RCD Mallorca and Athletic Club in Friday's semi-final draw.

Atlético de Madrid are back in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey semi-final after seven years since their last appearance at this stage of the competition. The red and white team beat Sevilla FC by one goal to nil at the Estadio Metropolitano and place themselves among the final four teams in the competition tomorrow, along with Real Sociedad, RCD Mallorca and Athletic Club.

In a cagy, evenly contested first half of few chances, both teams respected each other’s threats and had set up to nullify them. Atlético de Madrid were awarded a penalty in the 26 minute but Griezmann missed the spot kick after slipping whilst striking the ball.

The French striker also had a clear chance after the restart during a period in which the home side looked more in control of the game. Even so, Sevilla were a constant threat to Oblak's goal from set-pieces.

From the bench, both Diego Simeone and Quique Sánchez Flores tried to freshen their teams up and change the course of a match that had been very tight up until that point.

It was two of Simeone’s changes that led to the goal. Ángel Correa controlled a ball into space in an inside right position before cutting inside his man and into the box. His low pass across the face of the six-yard box was poked past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net by Memphis to open the scoring in the 79th minute.

In the final stages of the game Sevilla looked for an equaliser and Sergio Ramos had a clear chance from a corner. With Sevilla in search of a goal and pushing on looking for an equaliser, Atleti found chances to hit the Andalucians on the counter.

In the last seconds of the game, referee Gil Manzano, awarded Sevilla a penalty for a foul on Lamela inside the area which, after a VAR review, was disallowed. This was the end of the action and Simeone’s men came out on top.

The Metropolitano once again experienced a great night in the Cup and enjoyed their team's victory. Atlético de Madrid, cup champions on ten occasions, will once again play in the semi-finals of the most exciting tournament in Spanish football.
