Esther wins the Golden Boot at the Euros

The Spanish National Team has finished as runners-up in this European Championships; alas, putting aside the bitter taste of not being able to lift the trophy, Esther González has claimed the tournament’s Golden Boot, finishing as the top scorer in the continental competition.

With four goals, no one was able to match her tally. Swedish striker Blackstenius, Italy’s Girelli, and her teammate Alexia Putellas came close with three goals each.

Just two minutes after making her tournament debut against Portugal, she controlled a long ball with her chest and finished acrobatically with a backheel to open the scoring. She would find the net again in that match before half-time.

Against Belgium, still in the group stage, she scored her third after coolly finishing a one-on-one against keeper Lichtfus, following a superb through ball from Alexia. Finally, to seal Spain’s top spot in the group, the number 9 struck again in stoppage time against Italy. Thus, the player from Huéscar returns home with the trophy for top goalscorer.
