Germany up next in the semi-finals
Germany and Spain are set to battle it out for a place in the Euros final, with the clash played next Wednesday, 23 July, from 21:00 at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich. The semi-final lineup was decided after the Germans defeated the French in an intense match that ended 1-1 after extra time and was decided by a penalty shootout.
The team, led by Christian Wück, were a woman down for almost the entire match following Hendrich’s sending off in the 13th minute and managed to level the scores after Geyoro’s penalty put France ahead. Nüsken scored the equaliser and would later on have victory at her feet, also from the penalty spot. But her shot was saved by the French goalkeeper. After regular time, the shootout went Germany’s way, with goalkeeper Berger the star for the Germans. Not only was she named POTM after several crucial saves, but she also scored a penalty and saved two in the decisive shootout.
Extra-time pushed both teams to their physical limits, especially Germany, who played with ten for almost 120 minutes. The German’s journey in this Euro has included two victories against Poland (2-0) and Denmark (2-1) and a heavy defeat against Sweden (4-1). The Germans have scored six goals and also conceded six.
Spain’s 1-0 loss at the Paris Olympics is the most recent of the eight matches played between the two sides. The Euros semi-final in Switzerland will be the perfect stage for the national team to achieve their first ever win against Germany. Everything will be decided in Zurich in just four days.
💯 Un camino impecable.
