Luis de la Fuente addressed the press from the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia after revealing his Spain squad for the two-legged clash against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals. He began the press conference by sharing his thoughts on announcing the squad from the iconic location that is the Puente de la Solidaridad: “Being there and in the areas most affected by the floods was deeply moving and heart-wrenching. We want to convey strength and confidence. It is important to emphasise that Spain and football stand alongside Valencia.”

On Asencio’s call-up, he said: “Raúl has been having a fantastic season. He had been playing at in the youth categories, but some players progress quickly. I have always been in favour of giving young players a chance. He is doing really well, and he is another player joining the cause and the family we are building.”

“There are many great footballers, and many other who could have been included in this squad. It is a testament to the high level of Spanish football. Unfortunately, some players have not made it, but others have. We have assembled a fantastic group, and in my opinion, this is the best squad we could have put together. We are the reigning European and Nations League champions, and getting into this squad is not easy,” the national coach reflected.

Luis de la Fuente emphasised the importance of the great work done by clubs, youth development programs, and how well players take care of themselves: “Every day, this national team becomes more and more competitive.”

On his new staff: “I would like to thank Pablo Amo for his work with us. He was more than just a friend; he was part of the family. Two of our colleagues have left with him, and they will doubtlessly prove how good they are. I wish them all the best for the future. At the same time, I am very proud to have the best technical team I could ask for.”

“We feel very comfortable here. We have an incredible fanbase. They have always welcomed us with open arms, and Valencia has truly embraced the national team,” Luis de la Fuente enthused.

On the double header against the Netherlands: “Of all the matches we have played, this is the first time we are playing a two-legged knockout tie. I love the idea of playing the second leg at home. We want to qualify for the Final Four, and I believe the result will not be decided until we return to Mestalla. We are up against one of the best teams in Europe who have top-level players. They will demand that we perform at the same level as we did in the Euros.”
