MATCH REPORT | Real Madrid set up another Clasico for Super Cup final (3-0)
Carlo Ancelotti's side overcame Mallorca's stern resistance in Jeddah to set up a date with FC Barcelona on Sunday with the first major title of the year at stake.
The clash between the reigning Spanish Super Cup champions and RCD Mallorca, who were making their debut in the current format of the tournament, was an exercise in perseverance from Real Madrid, who are still dreaming of sweeping up all seven titles this season.
Carlo Ancelotti's side hit top gear from the very off, with rapid ball circulation and constant threat of their wide players Rodrygo and Vinicius testing Jagoba Arrasate's side, who were dedicated to battening down the hatches to stop the Madrid onslaught.
Jagoba Arrasate's brave side managed to hold out thanks to constant concentration and determination from their players, as well as the reflexes of Slovak goalkeeper Dominik Greif, who saved clear chances from Valverde, Bellingham and Mbappé, as well as a long-range effort from Aurélien Tchouameni.
After holding their own at the start, the Mallorcans gradually began to find their attacking options and they were able to threaten Courtois' goal with dangerous counter-attacks such as the one that Cyle Larin came close to finishing off after 20 minutes.
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will meet in Sunday's final in Jeddah with both teams winning one Spanish Super Cup each in the last two seasons.
Real Madrid maintained their dominance, but the visitors were constantly looking to hit back, and the tone remained the same until the last quarter of the game when the Balearic Islanders' resilience finally gave way.
Mbappé's umpteenth burst of pace was the genesis behind the goal, which Greif's hands nearly thwarted once again after Rodrygo's header against the post, before Jude Bellingham collected the ball to fire the ball into the back of the net past the crowd of opposition legs.
It took the reigning champions more than an hour to find the way to victory, which they would extend considerably in extra time and after the introduction of Dani Ceballos and Brahim Díaz with the pair changing the dynamic of play.
A killer pass to Mbappé forced Malaga player Martin Valjent to unintentionally deflect into his own net. Shortly afterwards, the Brazilian Rodrygo successfully concluded his persistent search for a goal with a first-time finish from a great assist by Lucas Vázquez.
3-0 in the end and another step forward for the madridistas in their dream of seven titles this season. Another clasico emerges on the horizon this Sunday. The third clasico final in a row, with both teams having won one each in the last two seasons and culminating this unforgettable Supercopa de España in the most spectacular way possible.
