MATCH REPORT | Spain wear down Albanian energy and complete a clean sweep of wins (0-1)

The national team secured their third consecutive victory at Euro 2024 and looked solid going into the Last 16.

Three games, three wins, five goals scored and none conceded. Spain are undefeated at the European Championships and the only team at the moment (Portugal could match them) to have won all their matches.

Spain are the team on everyone's mouths, such is their splendid form at these finals, after taking the spoils in Düsseldorf on Monday against a combative Albania, who gave it their all in their first appearance at the tournament.

Luis de la Fuente changed the entire team from the one that beat Italy four days ago, with the sole exception of centre-back Aymeric Laporte, who completed the first half against the Albanians.

The Balkan side, spurred on by their lively fans, came out determined to take the ball off Spain and aggressively press Spain when they were playing out from the back.

The Spain team had to pull up their sleeves to gradually wear down the onslaught from Sylvinho's team. They found success, firstly with crosses off the right from Jesus Navas, who became Spain's oldest ever player at a major tournament, and then from players breaking the lines and arriving late into the box.

On Wednesday, Spain will find out their Last 16 opponents for their match in Cologne on 30 June.

Mikel Merino and Joselu both found shots on target before Dani Olmo's talented inside play and pass set up Ferran Torres for the Valencian to fire a perfect left-footed curling shot in off the base of the Albanian keeper Strakosha’s post.

It was to be the only goal of the game and if it was, it was thanks in no small part to the cat-like interventions of David Raya, who made a superb save from Asilani on the stroke of half-time.

After the restart, Spain successfully gave minutes to the rest of their European Championships’ squad, with the exception of goalkeeper Álex Remiro. They also had some good chances too, with shots from Dani Olmo, Morata and Joselu, the latter with a spectacular acrobatic attempt.

With Albania's last gasp efforts thwarted by an always sharp Raya and his defence, the Spanish celebrations in Düsseldorf began and the team showed gentlemanly appreciation of the Albanian fans and players.

Italy joined Spain in qualifying for the Last 16 and Spain will find out their opponents this Wednesday, the date, Sunday 30 June at nine o'clock in Cologne. The date and match will, no doubt, already be marked red on the calendar.
