The year 2024, now behind us, was an incredibly intense one, full of new experiences for the team led by Montse Tomé. Among their many achievements, they lifted a new trophy: the UEFA Women’s Nations League.

As 2025 begins, it’s time to reflect, look back, and remember what the past twelve months have meant for the National Team. The balance sheet is overwhelmingly positive for a team that, in 2024, won the inaugural Women’s Nations League, secured qualification brilliantly for next summer’s UEFA Women’s Euros in Switzerland, and made their first-ever appearance at the Olympic Games, finishing fourth.

“2024 has been a year of new achievements by the Spanish National Team,” Tomé remarked. “We started with qualification for the Olympics, clinched in our match against the Netherlands, which also allowed us to play the final against France and win the first Nations League. In that final, we defeated a rival like France, a team we hadn’t managed to beat before.”

The team’s historic participation in the Olympic Games was a major milestone in what was an incredibly demanding and new competition for them. “Of course, we wanted to improve on the fourth place,” said Tomé, “but it was positive to be there and to compete against the very best.”

Looking ahead, 2025 promises new challenges. The past year ended with the successful qualification for the UEFA European Championships, set to take place in Switzerland in July 2025.

While the senior team has had a very busy year, the youth teams have also shone brightly. Tomé made a point of acknowledging the rising talent coming through the ranks, reflecting on a remarkable year for the younger age ranks: “This summer, we reached the final of the U-17 World Cup and won the U-17 and U-19 European Championships. It’s crucial to observe what other strong nations are doing to keep improving.”

In La Cartuja, during the two Nations League matches, attendance records were broken, and Tomé took the opportunity to send a message of gratitude to the fans: “We’ve felt the support in every city we’ve played in, whether in official matches or friendlies. This support makes a real difference in the tough moments of a game. I encourage more and more people to follow us, get involved, and see for themselves how women’s football stands out for the quality of its play. We’ll keep working to improve and attract even more supporters.”

The year ahead kicks off with the qualifying phase for the next Nations League and, of course, the summer’s main event: the 2025 European Championships. Montse Tomé’s heartfelt wish for 2025 is for all her players to stay healthy and injury-free—“that’s the best wish of all.”
