A truly exceptional year. Starting with lifting a trophy against France and ending 2024 with a friendly win over the Gauls in Nice. From February all the way through to December, the team enjoyed a high intensity year full of emotions, new experiences, and lessons that will stand them in a good position for 2025.

The first challenge for the team, who came into the year as reigning World Cup winners in 2023, was the UEFA Women’s Nations League. This was the inaugural edition of the tournament in women’s football , held in February at La Cartuja in Seville. Two crucial goals lay ahead: securing the first-ever qualification for the Olympic Games and winning another title. Victory in the semi-final against the Netherlands sealed their place in Paris 2024 in style, with a commanding 3-0 win.

France awaited as the opponent in the final in what was yet another major challenge. Spain had never beaten the French in 13 previous encounters. Breaking this streak and lifting the first Nations League trophy became the mission and was exactly what the team achieved. Montse Tomé’s unstoppable squad triumphed 2-0 over France, lifting their first Nations League trophy into the Seville night sky. The match was also enjoyed by 32,657 fans, setting a new record for the Spanish national team.

Mission accomplished: Olympic qualification and champions. But the year was far from over. Another significant objective awaited the national team: qualifying for the 2025 UEFA European Championships in Switzerland. Spain secured their spot for next summer’s continental championships in brilliant fashion, finishing top of Group A2 with 15 points, with 18 goals scored, and only 5 conceded. They surpassed Denmark, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. As the year ended, the team also discovered their group stage opponents and venues for the European Championships in Switzerland: Portugal, Belgium, and Italy.

One of the unique highlights for the team this year was their debut in the Olympic Games, an unforgettable experience for any athlete. In their first Olympic appearance, Spain earned an impressive fourth-place finish, playing the bronze medal match against Germany.

With numerous key goals achieved, Spain ended the year with several friendlies against high-level, tricky opponents in order to continue refining their game and preparing for what lies ahead. The results from these four friendlies couldn’t have been better, ending the year with morale-boosting victories over South Korea and France. Not only did they beat France for the first time in history earlier this year, but they did it again in the final match of 2024 for Montse Tomé’s squad. A year Spain wraps up as the world’s second highest team and Europe’s top-ranked side.

2025 promises a thrilling start with exciting prospects: qualification for the Nations League and, of course, the European Championships in July in Switzerland.
