Montse Tomé: "Scoring so many goals is really positive and gives us confidence."

After the matchday 2 of Euro 2025 Group B, and with qualification for the quarter-finals secured, Montse Tomé answered journalists' questions in the post-match press conference.

The national coach began by analysing the clash against Belgium. "I think it was a match that unfolded as we expected. Belgium are a great team, very organised, they close down the spaces well and break quickly," she explained. "We knew we'd face more resistance at the start of the match. I think Belgium defended well; even so, we had plenty of chances and an 80%-20% dominance of possession in the match," she added.

Montse Tomé was keen to highlight the team's great work: "I'm happy with the team's performance. One of our objectives was to keep a clean sheet, but we couldn't today. However, we are at the Euros and we've scored six goals, which is a lot, and I think the team were very good."

Regarding the young player, Vicky López, she once again praised her work, highlighting her excellent first half showing. She also spoke about Aitana Bonmatí, who played 45 minutes. "We were able to give Aitana 45 minutes, and having players like that coming on allowed us to be able to ensure Spain continued to perform at the highest level," she stated. "It's a luxury to have so many options, and this gives us many potential solutions depending on the match situation."

Of the Catalan midfielder, she affirmed that she continues to progress in terms of her fitness and that they must be cautious before she returns to the starting XI. "Aitana would already be playing if it were up to her. We have to be patient and give her the appropriate progression. We do not want to take any risks because she's a vital player for us."

Spain have scored eleven goals in two matches, statistics that the national coach wanted to emphasise: "Scoring so many goals is really positive and gives us confidence." She also added: "The team is fresh, running the channels well, receiving well, and we're being clinical."

Finally, she spoke about the POTM of the match: Alexia Putellas. "She gives a lot to the team collectively. She's a player who has found her rhythm and is happy out there on the pitch. I'm happy for her and for all the players," Montse said about the Spain midfielder.

 

Alexia Putellas, as the star performer in the match, also appeared at the press conference. "I think a match has many phases and facets of play, and the team is performing well in practically all of them. If there's something that is ever not going well, the team adapts and improves it," she explained.

Furthermore, the Spanish player praised her teammates. "Esther is incredible. The pressure she allows us to put on is incredible. The commitment she has and how she initiates the press is a great aspect of leadership that she possesses," she highlighted about the centre-forward. "This is what makes a team, and it is about all of us, and we are very clear about that in the dressing room. This mindset is what will take us very far," she concluded about her teammates.

Regarding herself, she clarified that she was feeling great: "I'm feeling very good, mentally very quick too, and I see everything very clearly. I'm going to keep working so it stays that way and try to help the team."
