Montse Tomé: "It wasn’t our day today"

The national team coach and forward Alexia Putellas spoke after the defeat to Germany.

Montse Tomé began by acknowledging the team's sadness. "It wasn't the result we wanted, but I think the team competed today and gave their all from the first moment," she said of a game decided by a penalty. The national coach also highlighted the "effort" of her players: "I think we have to appreciate the effort the girls put in because today Spain played a great game." "Sport has its ups and downs, and today it's our turn not to win," she added. She also stated that they will have to "evaluate, analyze, and learn" from this experience.

The Spanish coach also reflected on the overall Olympic campaign, stressing that the objective was to progress step-by-step in this "completely new tournament" for the team. "We started this tournament trying to set an objective in every match, which was to overcome the challenges and win," she underlined.

Captain Alexia Putellas, visibly affected by the defeat, told the media that the "objective was to win a medal and bring it back to Spain, so now it's hard to think about anything else, even though we are fourth."

"Yesterday we were practicing penalties and I was placing them well. I thought I would put it where I did in the first Champions League final, but I didn't," she explained about her late penalty miss. "I feel terrible for my teammates, for their families, and for everyone. It hurts me to have missed it. I'll step up to take the next one even if it doesn't help us now," she said.

Finally, Putellas stressed that the team is very ambitious, but that women's football is becoming more evenly contested by the day. "It's obvious that everything is becoming more and more equal. Now our rivals see us as World Champions, they prepare for us a lot more. They play a different type of match," said the Catalan. "After this tournament they're going to look for our weaknesses and we have to be strong. It's getting more and more complicated, everyone wants the same prize," she concluded.
