Montse Tomé: “We wanted to win and see the team competing at the highest level”
The French national team was the final challenge of 2024 for the reigning World Cup and UEFA Women’s Nations League champions, who were determined to end the year as they had started it—with a win over their neighbours. Their opponents were a tough side under a new head coach, and Spain had specifically chosen to play them to ensure a match that demanded their very best. Montse Tomé’s team approached the game accordingly: “We started the match with great intensity, aware of the kind of intensity France would bring. The key was to gain possession of the ball early on and create chances to score. We struck early with Aitana’s goal. They had their transitions in the first half, but we managed to dominate every situation as the game progressed. In the end, we got the win we wanted and saw the team competing at the highest level.”
After friendlies against South Korea and France, Spain wraps up the final international window of the year with a total of nine goals scored and, most importantly, “very positive feelings” in the camp. The 5-0 win over South Korea and the 2-4 victory against France have left Montse with a sense of optimism about the future: “The team feels very good, the group feels very good, and what we’ve seen on the pitch during these matches gives us a really good feeling. Honestly, we’re very happy with how things have gone and how the players have performed. We need to keep working on the details, but 2025 is looking like it will start well, and we’re ready to give it our all.”
Next year starts with a bang, as the qualification for a new edition of the Nations League begins in February, followed by the European Championships in Switzerland in the summer. The head coach has a clear vision for 2025: “I hope all the players stay healthy, that they can compete well and enjoy the matches. I hope 2025 starts with lots of energy, allowing us to keep doing what we love. This is a game; we enjoy it, and we’re fortunate to be able to live off it. I just hope everything goes well in 2025.”
